Printer question . . . ink?

Hello! I just bought an HP series Photo ink cartridge. I already have the black and tricolor ink cartiridges, which are already in my printer. My question is, do I put in the photo ink cartridge while the other two cartridges (the black and tricolor) are still in the printer, or should I take one of them out? If so, how do I put in the third photo cartridge or which cartridge should I take out? I'm going to be printing photos. I have a HP photosmart D5100 series printer. Oh yes, and when I bought the photo cartridge it came with an extra "cartridge holder" thing along with it. Please help! Thanks . . . I have no idea what I'm doing! :)

Printer question . . . ink?
Ok, you should see some shapes printed on the print cartridge - circle, triangle, square, pentagon.

On the carriage (where you slot in the cartridges), there will be a corresponding shape printed there as well. This means that the cartridge with the same shape can be put into that slot.

For your printer, the photo cartridge should take the place of the black cartridge. So for normal printing, you should have the black and color cartridges inside. For special photo printing, you should have the color and the photo cartridges inside. Bit of advice: in future, you dont really need the photo cartridge. The normal cartridges (black and color) work almost as well. For non-professionals, you can hardly tell the difference unless you put the photos side by side.

The extra cartridge holder thing is for you to put the spare cartridge (assuming you remove the black one to put in the photo cartridge). This is because once the cartridges are opened, they tend to dry up. Hence the extra cartridge holder is designed to slow down that process by capping the printhead.
Reply:with Hp there should only be 2 catridges one black and one tricolor, its also written what colors the cartidges are i think and normally the black cartridge is on the left and the tricolor on the right.

gently take off the empty cartridge and replace it with the new one.

forget about the cartridge holder or whatever i cont know what that is for either.
Reply:Alex.. Cool!

Well, the D5100 printer can work with 4 cartridges.

HP 100 - Gray - Used to print Black and white photos.

HP 95 - Tricolor - Used for both documents and photos.

HP 98 - Black - Used for Documents.

HP 99 - Photo Color- Used for color photos.

The HP 95 should always be in its position. This cartridge contains Cyan, Magenta and yellow color in it.

Whenever u want to print b%26amp;w photos, place HP 100 Gray on right tray.

Whenever u want to print some text documents, remove the gray and place the HP 98 on right tray.

Whenever u need to print color photos, remove black or Gray from right tray and place the HP 99. The Photo color has light cyan, light magenta and black in it. So the quality of the pic will be high while compare of using with black. And u can also save the color ink too.

If understand mark this answer as best.
